The Dividing of Soul and Spirit

A few weeks back I wrote, “without emotion, nothing happens” today I will attempt to bring more clarification to the idea that without an emotional encounter with God Almighty and His Spirit sent from heaven nothing of a long term benefit will happen in our lives and there will not be left behind in you a lasting and positive change.  And we will not insure our eternal destiny unless we have the Living God break down all our emotional fleshy way of thinking and move our thoughts to see things as they really are so that we can be saved from our blindness and unbelief.

Jesus answered, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born of water and [of] the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God. John 3:5

Nor will we realize in our life the true necessary change and hopeful deliverance from our personal misery and the misery that awaits all who will not receive His Son and the demands of His salvation. At the core of this assertion is the claim that if you would be saved from a very deceptive world system loaded down with tons of mind numbing distractions and deceptions; it is clearly necessary that a divine work of grace must be initiated from heaven toward us in laser beam precision to arouse a new and saving direction in our lives that contradicts all that we natively feel and are prone to do by nature. We simply can not please God for one hour outside of true and living faith in His Son.
We must be delivered from a lost state of thinking and wrong way of life. Sinful and even deliberate evil must be dealt with by Divine Justice as it relates to our personal account before a three times holy God; This work of God in a human life is the only true source of real, positive, and lasting change for any who seek a better life in the here and now, and for all those who would desire an eternal home filled with blessings untold and surrounded by the immense love of God.

I wish I could stop right here and have everyone who will read this writing to send me an instant message and say a hearty AMEN to my premise thus far, then we all could move on the deeper things in the way of faith, but my life experiences thus far dictate otherwise. I have come to realize that many will not receive the point I am making at face value, so sadly, I seek now to stay the naysayers with this effort, how do I know there are naysayers, because I too must hear those voices in my head. I used to be a naysayer and scoffer of the supernatural and the Divine method.

Unbelief is a disease of the soul. A cancer that eats away at the very fabric of who we are as divinely created beings. The material world works us into a lull spiritually (takes away our eyes of faith) and the malignancy of unbelief works its way deeper into our soul so that we fall for every materialistic presentation found in our very visually based culture.

The Word of God stands against this vain philosophy as it sets forth an obvious fact in Heb. 4:13 that everything exists before the eye of an unseen God.

“Neither is there any creature that is not manifest in his sight: but all things [are] naked and opened unto the eyes of him with whom we have to do.”

Sadly for years I settled on the basic premise that we must live on the miracles of history to believe in a God of history but a God who has changed to a more reduced reality, believing  primarily in the fantastic reports of the people of the Bible who in their days saw the sun stilled in the sky, the Red Sea parted exposing a dry surface for millions of Jews to pass from death to life, and the incredible judgment of God in the days of Noah when the flood waters covered the entire surface of the earth but Noah and his family were saved by listening to a unseen Voice and entered the ark designed supernaturally by God to save them.

These displays of Incredible power and the numerous miracles of God found in the lives of those who lived way back in history validate the point I am making today that "without emotional encounter with God, nothing happens". But we must remember that Satan and his ministering spirits also have access to power, do you remember Pharaoh's magicians?

By leaving the extravagant miracles of the past in the ground and not calling them forth to confront the problems we face in our world puts the Body of Christ on the defensive and leaves us in a weakened state.

The great miracle of faith that overtook the shepherd boy turned warrior David the day he stepped up to the plate for the God of Israel and slung that stone in faith slaying the giant Nephilm named Goliath has become for us in modern day America nothing but a buried reality. We lull ourselves into thinking that there are no Goliath’s today to kill, there are no blasphemers who scoff at the God of Israel... Really?
As obvious a fallacy as thinking the God is not the same God today as He was yesterday and will be in the future, we still continue to let the world dupe us into thinking less of the Words of God. We find a way to satisfy our conscience with thoughts that Jesus called us to be "nice christians"

We die and go to heaven barely challenging the darkness for the souls of men. Duped into thinking that we don’t need more evidence of the power of God in our time. We just need enough religious evidence that all is well by using the measuring rod of church attendance and the amount of money we have gathered to build buildings in our name.
We seek to ensure our minds that there is a God and a simple prayer of faith to buy some hell insurance will deliver me from the coming destruction.
The problem with the simplistic way of presenting a sterile Christ to a desperate world is that this generation of unbelievers living in this modern world is daily exposed to more satanic power than ever. Just one walk through the electronics section of Target reveals the vivid graphics of life as the world wants us to see it in our media driven society.

Our kids are enticed daily by the creative optics of high definition 3D movies and video games presenting very real life on the screen with life-like special effects. Their virtual reality is their reality.
Kids who play video games are part of a much more intense and passionate life on the TV screen where they kill and maim the horrible creatures their favorite video game animators create. They look at a flat screen TV as though that is real and everything outside their window is gray background.

Bombarded daily with vivid colors and detailed animation of real life video games that make life on the screen more real than life itself, yes our kids today look every day at a much more illumined landscape in the comforts of their home which promote threats not only from rival nations and people groups but terrorizing aliens from galaxies unknown. A battle scene so fantastic that needs their constant attention to be agents that save the world from devastation.

As we look at the Word of God and study the spiritual components of saving faith in Christ we must always put aside fear of the unknown, especially when it comes to the process of discovering God’s Truth about Himself and His method of getting our attention.

He is Our Creator; God Almighty manages all of our humanity because He wove it together in our mother’s womb. He understands the deepest complexities of our neurological make up. The Lord of glory is not confused by any medical phenomenon that baffles the minds of the most intelligent brain surgeons.

“Neither is there any creature that is not manifest in his sight: but all things [are] naked and opened unto the eyes of him with whom we have to do.” Heb. 4:13

Nor is Our Creator confused by the psychological mysteries associated with the depths of how our mind works chemically. Even beyond our the most complex of our mental process of forming thoughts that influence action, God as our Creator completely and totally understands how we are motivated to do what we do on day to day basis.

“O LORD, You have searched me and known me.

You know my sitting down and my rising up; You understand my thought afar off.

You comprehend my path and my lying down, And are acquainted with all my ways.

For there is not a word on my tongue, But behold, O LORD, You know it altogether.

You have hedged me behind and before, And laid Your hand upon me.

Such knowledge is too wonderful for me; It is high, I cannot attain it.” Ps 139:1-6

Well Jonathan what’s so important about these facts you have just stated about God’s knowledge of me and all people you might say, some of you might say, "I’ve been a Christian my entire life". And I have been taught by my parents and my Sunday School teacher that God made me, I have known these facts from my earliest days. I know from the rote memory verses I have stored in my brain  that He is in control of my very precious life and that He cares for me incomprehensibly.

It's not what you know in the mind but what you know in the heart, deep down in your spirit!
o you understand how God knows you? How God sees you? How Our King motivates you? You may have but a thimble full of God’s knowledge of your life and your destiny and there is an ocean full of knowledge to be understood and appreciated before your life is over here on earth.

God’s real knowledge of us, my dear friends, is a very complicated work, and it is beyond our comprehension and it is timeless.

My emphatic statement today is that in our modern times we need to see real miracles happen in our time and space reality and we need Our God to initiate real life changing encounters in and through us to see the supernatural happen to re-establish God as the unseen King of the universe in our world.

So as a fellow mental weakling before an all knowing eternal God, a God knowing the end from the beginning, the very Lord of all men and nations, we crawl before His Lofty Throne with great care, for He is the Creator of all men, the God of time and circumstance has reserved 7000 that will not bow to the Baal's of our time. He will ransom a people for Himself. Not a group of religious people filled with self-determinism, no, I believe the Lord wants people on fire with spirit-filled excitement about His Power and His Grace to bear the burden of carrying out His plan to save a lost and dying generation of humanists and Baal worshipers.

Imbibing a truthful consideration of the timeless Divine method of introducing life in the spirit of man is critical to appreciating the way God saves mankind and how He brings men into a saving relationship and reveals to them the true state of their soul.

It takes nothing less than emotional earthquake deep down in crevices of our broken and damned souls that awakens us through the transmission of heavenly shock waves that cut through our defiled human corpse that changes our soul from operating under a spirit of death and our personal effort to perform a life of serving our own religion.

Our dead religious works need to be washed and redeemed, and we must be transformed in the soul, so that our dead soul can come alive to be released to live life in the spirit to see the eternal state and to respond accordingly by making a positive submissive move toward The Creator with a new and willing heart made ready to do whatever He says.

These positive results include the deposit of the proven historically accurate words of God in our native language, understandable to us, and only when the vetted word of God is presented in a clear and simple way will an imprisoned soul break free to live a spirit-filled life.

This translating work of grace in the soul of any man, woman, or child will leads any observer of that person’s life to conclude that the Word of God has taken root in that person’s soul. Notice the words of Paul from I Corinthians, these words were written to a church launched through Paul's simple gospel preaching in the market squares, homes, and pagan worship centers of port city of Corinth :

“I thank my God always concerning you for the grace of God which was given to you by Christ Jesus, that you were enriched in everything by Him in all utterance and all knowledge, even as the testimony of Christ was confirmed in you, so that you come short in no gift, eagerly waiting for the revelation of our Lord Jesus Christ, who will also confirm you to the end, that you may be blameless in the day of our Lord Jesus Christ. God is faithful, by whom you were called into the fellowship of His Son, Jesus Christ our Lord.” I Cor. 1:4-9

The power of God’s word brings real evidence and reveals change and new found power to change in the soul formerly dead person. This divine work of grace reveals to a dubious world saturated in cynicism a new person willing to do anything to please the God who changed them, the God of gods – El Elyon – Lord of lords. This changed person will reveal a boldness of faith that will lead them do anything required, even the horror of submission to the stake of their personal execution or the loss of all their goods and position in society.

This “way” of conversion changes the soul of any person who is responds positively to preaching of His Word. Our bibles and the history of man teach that these uniquely changed persons are willing when called upon to submit to any difficulty that results from walking with their new found faith.

All those who experience the real changes associated with a saving relationship to the Living God must be willing to do whatever the Master of their soul instructs them to do.

For all men have a revelation of God generally. They can see the sky, see themselves in the mirror, see with their human eyes life on planet Earth and they must conclude either they are part of His creation or they believe the lie that they are part of a billions of years process that has no intelligence behind the multifaceted products of diverse life as we see and know here on the 3rd planet from the sun.

The Word of God written tells us in Heb. 4:12

”For the word of God [is] quick, and powerful, and sharper than any two edged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and [is] a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.”

This verse captivates me.

What makes the verse so powerful? What is the verse really saying and what does it really mean?

The truth established in the first place is the differentiation of the words of God verses all other words. God’s word is quick and powerful. The same words that spoke light into existence are the same words that awaken a dead soul and cause that dead soul to come to life.

The verse goes to describe the nature of that power in a human heart. Dividing and separating the soul and the spirit. Wow, that’s an interesting concept?

What is this dividing of the soul and the spirit? Some of you might not even know that there is such a work in the soul of man, nor do you believe in concept that there is a division of soul and spirit because you believe that humans consist of just 2 parts, the soul and the body.

This verse in Hebrews reveals at the very least that there is a distinction between the “soul” and the “spirit”.

Also the Word of God calls forth the spirit from the soul. What I see here is the same power that raised Lazarus from the dead. When the Lord spoke the name of Lazarus, He spoke light and life to a literally dead body and with an imprisoned soul sleeping in the grave.

Read with me the account of Jesus and his encounter with the death of Lazarus found in John 11:9 - 11

Jesus answered, “Are there not twelve hours in the day? If anyone walks in the day, he does not stumble, because he sees the light of this world. But if one walks in the night, he stumbles, because the light is not in him.”  These things He said, and after that He said to them, “Our friend Lazarus sleeps, but I go that I may wake him up.”

We can conclude from the words of Jesus that His light broadcasted alleviates the state of being in lost darkness and death.

Why would Jesus use the analogy of a day verses night time when discussing His ministry to disciples and their journey to the tomb of Lazarus?  Walking in the day (light) verses the night?

Jesus spoke of night walking verses day walking to his disciples as they went to the graveside of their friend. He explained to them and to us the associated results of each choice we make, then afterward He said to His disciples our friend Lazarus sleeps, “but I go that I may wake him up”.
Later, in this same chapter in John gospel, Jesus performs the work of waking his friend from the dead this way:

Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in Me, though he may die, he shall live. And whoever lives and believes in Me shall never die. Do you believe this?” John 11:25-26

Faith is the essential ingredient for all those who experience the supernatural translation from death (darkness) to light and eternal life. Our Lord challenged Martha to exercise faith and to belief in His power and His Presence before her as being the only source of true life and light, the only hope she had in the resurrection of her brother from the dead. Belief in His Words which were clear and emphatic, “I AM the resurrection and the life”.

The account also reveals the unique conundrum within the heart of Our Lord whose unlimited and perfect connection with heaven’s power still revealed His heart as He wept, yes the Son of God wept at the sight of a dead believer in the tomb.

We know from history that Jesus was destined to go to Joseph’s tomb after His death in a few short weeks. The calling of God the Father for His Son to die came to Our Lord as an irreversible edict, it was to be an absolute necessity for Jesus to go directly to the tomb, no shortcuts.

So he must do for His friend Lazarus what He will do for all of those who will believe in Him. Jesus must face the same death that rests on all of humanity, and for all those who would believe that He came to save them from death and eternal darkness.

He came to save those lived before His earthly ministry and those right there beside Him at His appearing and for the throngs of people groups yet to be born.

The power to separate men from death and darkness exists only in the Son of David.  This power is housed in the body of the Son of Man. Yes indeed the very Son of God, the foretold Jewish Messiah that came for all of those who believe in the entire history of His work of His redemption.

From His work of creation most importantly the light and all living things, the heavens, and human and animal life to the sad fall of man into sin.

From the fall of man to the flood waters of judgment sent to judge the earth in the days of Noah. Even from the days of Noah’s ark rest on the mountains of Ararat to the powerful call of Abraham from Ur of the Chaldeans (Babylon) to follow the Voice of His Creator.

From the Abrahamic wanderings to Egyptian exodus leading to the mighty deliverance from the Red Sea, from the Red Sea parting to the conquest of Canaan by the Lord’s anointed general - Joshua, from the conquests Joshua to the establishment of the Throne of David.

From the point of the establishment of David’s throne over all of Canaan and the known world in the city of David - Jerusalem. From the time of the established throne of David in Jerusalem to the construction of Solomon’s temple on Mt Moriah.

From construction of Solomon’s temple to the time of falling away which led to the deportation of the Israelites to Nebuchadnezzar’s Babylon.  From the Babylonian deportation to Daniel’s dream of the empires that would rise and fall for the remainder of the age and to the days of the rebuilding of the temple through the ministry of Ezra and Nehemiah. And from the days of Esther to the announce to Elizabeth that her son would be the forerunner of Messiah.

From the days of Our Lord's earthly ministry to our times, those of us who are spiritually alive today that are anxiously waiting for His Glorious appearing and for those souls yet to be born still waiting to claim their liberty from the grave and eternal death, YES, all of us need to exercise Mary’s faith, all of us need the same remedy as Lazarus. FREEDOM from a dead soul, so we can come alive to Go's voice in us which is the hope of glory,.

All of us need to hear the Word of God to be quickened from the same death that fell upon our brother Lazarus. Mary believed and her brother was saved from a very real death.

Look at her response to Jesus words in v. 27:

She said to Him, “Yes, Lord, I believe that You are the Christ, the Son of God, who is to come into the world.” John 11:27

Compare to Rom.10:9-10

For with the heart one believes unto righteousness, and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation. For the Scripture says, “Whoever believes on Him will not be put to shame.”

Mary received the Lord’s words and her brother was saved, pointing to us today that for all those who believe the Word of God for salvation, you are promised life from the dead. We all come from the same place of hopelessness as Mary and her family faced before they were saved, and in the same way you and I will be saved one day from our death if we believe in the resurrection and the life -- Our Yahshua Messiah!.

You see my dear reader, Lazarus in the tomb, dead as a door nail, is a picture of our true state in this world, all mankind is fully dead and lost, trapped in a soul which is a fallen, with a spirit that is bound permanently to a sentence of death bought about by our very own personally committed crimes against heaven’s command to obey God's laws which are not grievous but life giving.

Our crimes are seen clearly by an All Knowing God and they are in the face of a perfectly righteous Savior. Who by example showed us how we are supposed to live. His works are recorded forever, and his works will be forever before us, as His words will be re-spoken forever and ever in heaven.

He showed us perfection in His life, a life filled with incredible activity and much stress upon his soul yet without sin. His many works and words left a wake children set free from demonic power, hungry people fed, thousands of body parts and limbs made whole again, and powerful words still speaking to us today.

As Jesus faced the tomb and His very real death soon to come, Jesus obeyed His Father and His Father reveals the results of His submissive spirit -- Resurrection from the grave for Lazarus, and soon for all of those who believe -- eternal victory over eternal death!

Reading on in John 11 we finally come to the actual words that Jesus spoke to the dead body of Lazarus, the words that quickened Lazarus lifeless body from the dead:

“Then Jesus, again groaning in Himself, came to the tomb. It was a cave, and a stone lay against it. Jesus said, “Take away the stone.” Martha, the sister of him who was dead, said to Him, “Lord, by this time there is a stench, for he has been dead four days.”

Jesus said to her, “Did I not say to you that if you would believe you would see the glory of God?” Then they took away the stone from the place where the dead man was lying. And Jesus lifted up His eyes and said, “Father, I thank You that You have heard Me. And I know that You always hear Me, but because of the people who are standing by I said this, that they may believe that You sent Me.” Now when He had said these things, He cried with a loud voice“Lazarus, come forth!” And he who had died came out bound hand and foot with grave clothes, and his face was wrapped with a cloth. Jesus said to them, “Loose him, and let him go.” John 11:38-44

Let us go back and look again at Heb. 4:12

“For the word of God [is] quick, and powerful, and sharper than any two edged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and [is] a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.”

We must let this account of Jesus at the tomb of Lazarus to become a fixed scene in our minds as we read this account in Hebrews of the real power contained in the Word of God.  These Hebrew believers were about to see the destruction of the Temple in Jerusalem. They were about to see the loss of everything that matters to a Jew, the temple in Jerusalem, and some of them were to lose even their lives.

As believers in the words of Jesus today we should not expect anything less then was Mary and Martha experienced at the tomb of their brother Lazarus. We should also prepare ourselves to become like Mary and Martha in our world today, a people known for their excitement in the power of God to save people from death.

As with Mary and Martha, so it will be with you and me when we speak the timeless words of life to a lost and dying generation of people, once they hear the words of Jesus they to will be encouraged to believe on His resurrection, and they will know the division of the soul and spirit.

So we must see with Mary and Martha the implications of His real resurrection to our world.

Jesus disciples believed in the resurrection and they rocked Jerusalem and then continued to rock the uttermost parts of their world with the message of resurrection.

They believed that if they declared the simple words of the Torah (God;s righteous Law) that leads their fellow Jews to repentance, and then declared the word of resurrection of their Messiah Yahshua from a real grave to their world of cynical gentiles and unbelieving Jews, they to would see the real supernatural work of the dividing of soul and spirit on the inside of thousands of dead human souls.

Let’s embrace the words of God and preach these words with expectation and hope…. If we do, death will be canceled in the souls of men and true life will happen and change will rock our world!
